Egg Industry Information
The Organization
Manitoba Egg Farmers (MEF) represents 170 regulated egg and pullet farmers in Manitoba, producing about 76 million dozen eggs annually. MEF, fully funded by farmers, was formed in 1972 to address industry challenges like price fluctuations and overproduction, leading to the adoption of supply management and a quota system.
Since its formation, MEF has increased egg sales and production by 50% while reducing its environmental footprint by 50%, and has supported 34 new farmers in the last 12 years. Today, about 45% of Manitoba’s eggs are processed into liquid or dry products for national and international markets, contributing $115 million annually to the provincial economy.
MEF prioritizes research, animal care and food safety, and emphasizes the importance of providing choice to consumers. Farmers provide a range of eggs, including nutritionally enhanced and from various housing systems, and MEF actively markets all eggs through advertising, sponsorships and community engagement. Over the years, MEF has evolved its name to better connect with consumers, now emphasizing “farmers” over “producers.”
MEF is proud of its collaboration with the University of Manitoba on state-of-the-art facilities to showcase egg farming to the public at the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre, and do important research to further the egg industry.
