WINNIPEG – Manitoba Egg Farmers has donated 10,000 coupons for a free dozen eggs to schools across the province through the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba (CNCM).

Thanks to Manitoba Egg Farmers (MEF) and Egg Farmers of Canada’s Egg Farmers Give Back program, up to 120,000 eggs will land in the hungry bellies of children across Manitoba.

“Manitoba Egg Farmers is committed to giving children a healthy start by providing free eggs to schools across the province,” said Catherine Kroeker-Klassen, Chair of MEF. “A protein-rich breakfast of eggs sets students up for a day filled with learning new things and growing strong bodies. We’re grateful for the opportunity to supply nutritious and tasty eggs to students in schools across Manitoba, and for the CNCM for providing the opportunity for schools to have access to eggs at no cost.”

These free eggs are essential to help stretch meal programs and feed children high-protein meals throughout their school day.

“Working with local community partners to support the health and wellbeing of children and youth in Manitoba is an important part of a successful school meal program” said Clara Birnie RD, Community Dietitian and Program Grants Manager, CNCM.

“Because of the partnership with Manitoba Egg Farmers, students are being nourished by and learning about local Manitoba foods. Not only does MEF provide a generous donation of eggs for schools, but they have partnered with us to help us provide free professional development opportunities for staff working with school meal programs. Working together as a community here in Manitoba we can provide rich environments in schools where food literacy and nutrition are supported, something our team of registered dietitians at CNCM truly values. We feel fortunate to have a strong community partner like MEF to make this possible.” Said Birnie.

A teacher from a Manitoba school participating in the program agreed: “Again, with the rising costs of groceries, the coupons have been so wonderful to have. We are able to serve eggs in a variety of different forms, and students love when they are incorporated into their breakfast. Starting their day with protein is a great way to ensure that they will not be hungry and can focus on their work.”
